Best route to get MDS support for PlayBook app?

RIM ISV here

looking to port our ISV's BlackBerry 6.0 and Android 2.3 app to PlayBook.

We are an IT-based product so security is of the utmost concern.

Our product requires HTTP Request and Socket level MDS connections (via BlackBerry Bridge or whatever).

What is the suggested course of action?

  •

Write new app in Playbook Adobe Air SDK?

  •

    Wait for Playbook Java Player?

  •

    Wait for Android Player?

Re: Best route to get MDS support for PlayBook app?

Unlike the Java SDK, there is currently no way to get an MDS connection in code (that I'm aware of).  Can you use your own HTTPS connection instead?

We don't know much about the Java players for BB and Android. They may or may not work for your product, and even then, the user experience may not be what you are after. For these reasons, I think it's best to write a native app, if you can do it within the bounds of the current capabilities of the SDK.

So just to be sure.

There is no known way to create an MDS connection?  Not even in the Playbook Adobe AIR SDK?

Re: Best route to get MDS support for PlayBook app?

Not that i'm aware of. Someone is free to correct me if that's incorrect.

The reason is (I believe) because the devices are wifi only at this point and don't have any native PIM functionality, so they just don't need it. Later this year, there are supposed to be devices released with integrated wireless modems, and I have to assume that direct MDS connections will be available at that time.

You can use the 'bridge browser' if you have the bridge connected in order to get the secure connection by way of your BB smartphone as a user. However, that capabilities isn't exposed in the SDK.

On the whole, the SDK is rather limited at this point. I'd say it barely supports 30% of fhe capabilities of the Java SDK currently.
