Ahh... Thanks.  I think the change from mx:WindowedApplication to mx:Application is where I went wrong.

I don't think you ever really want to create an "Actionscript" project, since you won't get an app-xml file generated for you if you do.

 

To do pure AS, you create a Flex project like normal, but change you main class from Main.mxml to Main.as

The problem with an all actionscript project is that you won't easily have access to mx/spark components.  At least that I am aware of.
