application icon 86x86

Hi all,

fyi. I just read again the UI Guidelines document. It seems the guideline changed again.

For the application icon, it is no more 90x90, now, it is 86x86.

( An icon that is larger than 86-by-86 pixels will not display on the screen. )

Seems you're right... here's the link to the Designing application icons page.

Re: application icon 86x86

I just look at the UI Guidelines again and you're right. I wish they would make up their minds. It was 90x90 then 72x72 then 90x90 and now 86x86. :smileyvery-happy: I have always made mine 90x90. It works in the simulator. I guess I'll have to wait until I get a real playbook to see what is correct.

Re: application icon 86x86

If you make it 86x86 the little shadow that's generate by the system will appear.  I suppose you could also be sure to use a low alpha level around your icon, to let it show through a bit.

Re: application icon 86x86

Hi,

I had my application icon 90x90.

However, when submit application, they require 480x480 application icon ??

( Does that mean we need also a very big  480x480 application icon for application submission  ? )

Thanks.

Best to have your art as vector art (e.g. AI) so that scaling and conversion to PNG is clean and crisp.

Re: application icon 86x86

@T55555, yes, you need both.

The one that was formerly 90x90, and which as of the Beta 3 SDK must be 86x86 (with the main portion of the image actually in roughly 77x77 area), is for use in the device itself.

The 480x480 one is what gets displayed as the icon in App World.

I'm using Inkscape to generate such things, and I just Export as Bitmap with the two different resolutions and both look flawless.  (I actually tweak them slightly so they're not exactly the same but it's pretty simple either way.)

Re: application icon 86x86

Does the 480x480 icon need to be identical to the one that shows on the device? I've looked through App World and still am not sure where these are being used (unless it's in App World on the device)

Re: application icon 86x86

It doesn't need to be the same, though you'd probably like it to look very close.  As for where it is... well, it's the icon that all apps have in App World.  Not the screenshots... the icon.  I don't know how much clearer that could be. ;-)
