About Push-Enabled Android Apps - do they need to be running for the phone to indicate received push messages?

With reference to

http://developer.blackberry.com/android/apisupport/creating_push-enabled_android_apps.html

and the last sentence "The Android Runtime will queue your pushes until the application is launched.", what does that really mean? Is it sufficient on a BB to launch the Android app once to ensure the phone will always indicate a push message has been received for my app (ie even after I have switched from my app to some other app or phone is in sleep mode etc).

Thanks.

Rob.
