Product Overview


BlackBerry® Smart Card Reader 2.0 is a small, lightweight, and wearable smart card reader that is designed to allow for proximity controlled access to a BlackBerry smartphone and computer. The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader uses Bluetooth® 2.0 technology with advanced AES-256 encryption which is designed to enable secure pairing and communications between the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, BlackBerry smartphones, computers running Windows® XP or Windows VistaTM and PKI applications.

 

Note: BlackBerry Smart Card Reader 2.0 is supported on BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry® Device Software 4.1 or later. BlackBerry Smart Card Reader 2.0 is supported on computers running Windows XP SP2, Windows XP SP3, or Windows Vista SP1. All paired BlackBerry smartphones must support Bluetooth technology. BlackBerry smartphone users must download the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader software before pairing the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader with a BlackBerry smartphone or computer.

  • Support for two-factor content protection, which allows BlackBerry smartphone users to encrypt their content protection keys with their personal keys located on their smart cards*
  • Larger backlit LCD screen for displaying status information
  • Ability to specify the format of the secure pairing key generated in numeric or alphanumeric format
  • Support for ISO 7816 compliant smart cards, Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards, Common Access Cards (CAC), and SafeNet® 330 Smart Cards
  • Enhanced encryption protocols
    • FIPS 140-2 validated encryption module
    • Coverity Certification for Quality Code Level 2 and Secure Code Level 2
  • Ability for administrators to wirelessly manage how often users have to re-negotiate a security key between the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader and a computer or BlackBerry smartphone through the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server

 

*Note: This feature is only supported when using the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader with BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or later and BlackBerry Smart Card Reader software 2.0.
