BlackBerry Analytics Service

How to - Opt Out of BlackBerry Analytics

by BlackBerry Development Advisor on ‎02-28-2011 09:34 AM - edited on ‎02-28-2011 09:34 AM by BlackBerry Development Advisor

Q. What is the BlackBerry Analytics Service?

The BlackBerry® Analytics Service is a tool that is integrated into some applications on a BlackBerry device, which collects anonymous information about how applications are used.  The information is sent via the wireless network by connecting to the domain dc.webtrends.com.

Q. What is Webtrends?

Webtrends is a partner organization that is experienced in mobile analytics, who we have contracted with to help us collect this information.

Q. What does it mean when my BlackBerry device is requesting permission to connect to dc.webtrends.com?

When your BlackBerry device requests permission to access dc.webtrends.com, this means that the application in question is designed to gather analytics. The BlackBerry Analytics Service does not collect any personally identifiable information (for example, your name, email address, phone number).  The information collected cannot be tied back to who you are. It does collect information like how often an application is used, what screens are used, or how long the application was used, plus some technical information about the device like the application version, or the version of the underlying software. We use this information to guide us about how we can improve the application to work better for you, and to help us manage our business so we know what kind of applications are most popular with our customers.

Q. How can I disable analytics collection?

If you would prefer to prevent data collection, you can turn it off by following these steps:

  1. Open the Firewall Settings in Options->Security->Firewall
  2. Click the checkbox to enable the firewall
  3. Open the permissions settings for the application you would like to disable collection, by opening Options->Device->Application Management or Applications depending on which version of BlackBerry® Device Software you are running
  4. Click on the appliation name.
  5. Click on Edit Permissions
  6. Expand the Connections section by clicking the menu key and selecting Expand
  7. Set Server Network, Internet and Wi-Fi to Prompt
  8. Save the changes
  9. If prompted to restart to make these changes, choose restart now.
  10. Launch the Application from the Homescreen
  11. When prompted to allow a network communication, if the destination is dc.webtrends.com, choose Deny.
