Facebook Places - does it work with Curve 8520 yes or no

[ Edited ]

I'm sure everyone with an 8520 has been trying to figure this out for days now. Does it work or not? It would be helpful if the question could just be answered. From the instructions below (from blackberry support) One would assume that places can be used with no gps (highlighed in red). However, I am not able to set the location services on. I have confirned that my carrier allows gps access.

Please help us out here and comfirm if places can work OR NOT on this deivce. It's -30 in Canada and we are looking for distractions. Thank you.

To acquire a location using GPS technology, a BlackBerry with GPS capability must be used and location services must be enabled on the BlackBerry smartphone. If this option is disabled, Places will not function correctly, displaying inaccurate locations. If the BlackBerry smartphone does not have GPS capability, Places will use cell site location services to determine your approximate location, providing Location Services are set to Location On.

To enable Location Services, complete the following steps:

On a BlackBerry smartphone with BlackBerry Device Software 5.0:

  1. Select Options
  2. Select Advanced Options
  3. Select GPS
  4. Ensure GPS Services is set to Location On

On a BlackBerry smartphone with BlackBerry 6:

  1. From the homescreen, select the search icon
  2. Type Location Services
  3. Select Options
  4. Select Location Settings
  5. Ensure Location Services is set to Location On

Please note that if Location Services is not available, your wireless carrier may not be allowing GPS access. Please contact you wireless provider for more information.

Please note your Facebook profile privacy settings may also require some configuration in order to

allow Places to be shared. Please see the Privacy settings in Facebook for more information

UPDATE : thanks to fellow BB peep. Connect your device to something with bluetooth. Places is now up and running, Thanks!

That stinks - sorry to hear that. I don't really understand what the issue is. It seems that there are some things that work for some and not others. Not a lot of support from BB on this one either - I don't think they know what's going on. Good luck.

Re: Facebook Places - does it work with Curve 8520 yes or no

Thank you for pointing this out to people, I have been trying to do the same, but no one is listening!

Not heard anything back from blackberry since they told me they were looking into the issue and I agree with what you said about the software. It is able to work and all versions over v4.5.  In case some people haven't checked the basics though here are the phone requirements which blackberry state we need as a minimum - if you dont have all this then it is not going to work even if blackberry fix the software issue!!!

To use Facebook® for BlackBerry® smartphones, the following is required:

  • A data service plan from your wireless service provider
  • A BlackBerry smartphone with 64 MB of memory
  • 1.3 MB of available device memory
  • BlackBerry® Device Software v4.5 or later (to find your software version, click Options on the smartphone Home screen, then click About)
  • Access to Browsing Service. If you don't have access to Browsing Service, download Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v1.6
If you hear back before me, please let me know too! lol Its really bugging me now lol
One other option for people is if you log in to your phones browser can also do this on your home computer) and enter the email address
you can actually check in that way, its not as accurate as gps phones but as we don't have gps anyway that isn't going to make much difference, just don't do what I did and accidentally delete the tab cos you can't get it back! whooops!

Re: Facebook Places - does it work with Curve 8520 yes or no

Hi there.

I had this problem on sunday night.

Ive had my BB Curve 8520 for nearly 14 months now and never updated.

I wanted FB places to work and found out how.

  1. You need to plug your device into your computer, and update your device. (Im not using 5.0.0.681)
  2. When you have done this, you will need to let your BB reboot back up.
  3. Go on, find facebook and places should work from there.

I did this and it worked a treat.

I did have to download the new version of Blackberry Desktop Software, think it was Version 6 or somit.

Like some of the others have stated. Keep your software up-to-date and problems should arrise.

"Keep your software up-to-date and problems should arrise."

freudian slip?

:smileytongue:

i am completely up to date, have been from the start, considering all of the issues, and the countless fixes, that randomly work without reason for one phone and not the other, the only way facebook places will truly be successful for the 8520 is with a software update...so those of us who keep lucking out, are just left waiting...

Re: Facebook Places - does it work with Curve 8520 yes or no

For those who are still unable to use FB places feature, I found this solution.

Go to Options -> Advanced options-> GPS -> and there you should have some device as the GPS Data source. This could be a bluetooth device which you would have paired earlier from your Blackberry.

If you don't have any device selected in that list , Places will not work on 8520. I tried that removing all bluetooth devices.

There is no need to keep Bluetooth ON just we need to give a device in source.

That device need not to be a GPS compatible device.

And as shared earlier you need to install the latest version of FB app and logout from FB app and then do a device pull and log back in to use the FB places.

Also FB places should be enabled in your FB privacy settings.

this 100 % work thanx to xmen81 on crackberry "http://forums.crackberry.com/showthread.php?t=557870"
