I am not sure about the backlight staying on while charging, but on the second matter, you likely have some apps running in the background.
Remove the battery and reboot the device, see how it keeps the charge.
And, read this: http://www.blackberrynews.com/2008/05/20/battery-u

My guess is you left the garmin app running in the background using the red "end" key. If you make sure you properly close the garmin app, it's likely that the backlight won't stay on.
I'm not quite sure how Mr. Sander's post was the solution to your problem but, hey...Mr. Sanders is a good guy so he can have my kudos.

Two Methods:
1. On the Clock hit the Menu key and select Enter Beadside Mode.....this will kill the keypad and leave a dimmed clock.....
2. Or you can hit the Menu...Options and under When Charging.....change the default to Enter Beadside Mode....this will kill the keypad and leave a dimmed clock.....each time the phone is charged....

I bought a 9000 Friday afternoon. When I charged it Friday night the battery (I assume it was the battery) overheated and fried the phone. I go t a replacement phone today and when charging it tonight the battery again overheated. I took the battery out until it cooled down and the phone seems to be working ok, but it doesn't seem that the battery should overheat. Has anyone else had this problem?
