9700 touch pad not responding correctly

My pad will not function. It keeps selecting without my option to select restricting me from doing anything. Device stuck at network connections. Phone keeps turning on/off for mobile connection. Trouble began with simply dialing at random and various other non-selected choices. I feel that the touch pad may be the fault; however, I would appreciate an alternative to replacing my phone. TY for any advice.

The first line of defence is always a battery pull.  Remove your battery while your phone is powered on then replace it.

Yes, that is always my first response to any issue. My phone has lived a fantastic 3 years of only minor issues; however, I do feel the issue is hardware and not software. Reaching for something if you know what I mean.
