I am stuck with the same problem. I tried doing both, but nothing works. The desktop manager does give me the option of 'repair' but does not suggest any updates. It gets stuck on the 'checking for updates' dialogue box. What do I do?

So, the "repair" does nothing? I cannot tell for sure. But, these articles may be useful:
Before attempting, you may want to be certain that your Desktop Software is up to date:
And, if you are on a PC, also download and install to your PC the OS package you desire for your BB:
If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
