i would like to know if i can find my imei from any backed up file in blackberry desktop software as my phone has been stolen...

Yeah, your carrier should have your IMEI on file.  As well, the box that your new BlackBerry came in also has the IMEI printed on the side of it.

If my phone wasn't bought with the carrier it is running on now, can the carrier it is running on now provide me with the imei?

They "might" be able to do so. Why don't you call them and ask?
