Are there any differences between an App's "Close" and "Exit"?

I've noticed that some apps have an "Exit" (e.g.: Google Maps) menu entry instead of a "Close". Are these simply stylistic differences, possibly due to software designers who want to stay with an interface they already had in previous versions, or are there actually some subtle functional differences?

This is something to think about when one wants to make most efficient use of one's memory by "closing" apps that are not in use.

Thanks!

Normally there is no difference.

Some few apps you may notice a "close" or "exit" as well as a "logout".
