BB Bold 9700 continually goes into hourglass or "loading" mode. What is wrong?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.

I have to hard reboot 3-4 times a day. Sometimes that is the only way to get rid of the frozen loading mode. I relaoded the 6.0 software a couple of months ago. It seemed to help for about 2 weeks but back to the hourglass mode again.

 

Any other ideas?

I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:

It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, then if the behavior ceases, you may need to consider removing some apps/modules that are optional and/or you don't use (e.g., languages you don't need, 3rd party apps you don't use, etc.).

 

If the behavior continues in Safe Mode, then you should consider either seeking out a newer OS6 package (which perhaps may fix this) or falling back to OS5 (if your BB is just too limited to run OS6 well). It also may be that your BB OS is corrupt (if, for example, the reload you did had a problem of some kind), in which case reloading it may help.
