BBM doesn't work on my 9900 bold

I bought an unlocked phone online and my BBM won't work. I have an active blackberry plan with my provider (Bmobile in Trinidad)  however I am only able to make/receive calls along with text messages. I am also able to use whatsapp, twitter and browse. Only my BBM and facebook won't work. My edge is also always in lowercase ("edge"). I contacted my provider and they were unable to help me resolve the problem. The phone is unlocked but however after reading several posts on forums I believe that my phone is "Data locked". I have tried registering the phone manually using HRT and so forth but I never get a response.  The phone also displays that my Blackberry Internet Service is "not connected" although my provider says it is and also since my sim works in my old blackberry. Please help :smileysad:

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

From all I can research, I cannot determine if your carrier system natively supports the 9900 or not...so, just in case...

Any BB can be used on any carrier that runs the same radio frequencies that the BB is capable of (and I've no idea if your's are such). But, to bring a BB onto a carrier network that they did not sell to you, there are several hurdles to cross:

1) The carrier must say "yes" to the fact...they own their network and have every right to say what devices will be allowed to connect to it. If they say "no", then that's the end of it.

2) You must be sure that your BB is properly unlocked from it's originally manufactured-for carrier...see this helpful thread for details:

3) You must get all of your voice level services functioning on the carrier, before you even try anything about data

4) You must subscribe, from the carrier, to an adequate data plan to enable the BB-proprietary services you desire

5a) If the carrier directly supports your specific model BB, then you can proceed with registering the BB onto their network, generating the proper Service Book delivery to your BB, and proceeding to function.

5b) But, if the carrier does not directly support your specific model number of BB, then the challenges are much greater as most carrier systems will not deliver, to the BB, the necessary service books to enable the BB-proprietary data services, even if you do subscribe to them.

So, depending on all of that, your BB may or may not ever fully function on that carrier network. It can be quite tricky to accomplish, especially if 5b applies. So take a look at all of that and decide how you wish to proceed. Most folks wind up just buying a new BB if 5b applies.


 

Now all of that said, if your carrier system does natively support your model, then there could be other issues:

  • Your BB PIN could be reported as lost/stolen
  • Your BB PIN could remain locked into a prior carriers BIS system, which prevents your carrier from properly creating a BIS account for you

You may want to ask them about both of these possibilities...they might be able to dig deeper to see if that is the case. Of course, even if either is the case, there is still nothing you can do about it...you'd need to contact the seller and, if they represented this device as being able to be fully functional on any compatible carrier network, then they (the seller) will need to make good on that representation.

Thanks for all your help. My blackberry model is supported by my carrier and I do have an adequate plan. Also, I followed the instructions to ensure my phone was unlocked and it showed that it is unlocked. I will contact my carrier about possibilities of the PIN being locked. Thanks again!

I contacted my carrier about the PIN being unlocked and they are unable to do so since I did not purchase the phone from them. I also went to a phone repair store and they told me the phone has either a manufacture issue or RIM locked the PIN. Any other advice on how to get RIM to unlock the PIN?

Nope...well, maybe, but it will cost you to just ask them the question, even if they wind up refusing to do it (e.g., if it is lost/stolen, then they certainly won't unblock it for you). Refer (find "Incident Support" within there):

Your only recourse may well be with whoever you bought it from. If they represented it as being able to be fully used on any compatible carrier, then they may well have misrepresented it to you.
