BBM not working after OS 7.1 update

I have a BB Bold 9900 and the carrier is Vodafone in the UK. Im on holiday aborad and have been for the past month. I chose to leave my vodafone SIM in the phone and keep the wireless phone network off and just use BBM, whatsapp and my email whenever i could get wifi. This has been working perfectly for a month.

Last week the phone prompted me to update to OS 7.1. I did so and since then, my phone cannot connect to Blackberry Internet Services and therefore no bbm or emails can come or go (whatsapp is fine though...) even though my wifi is working perfectly.

I tried pulling the battery out and everything and it just won't connect. The host routing table has a whole list of alphanumeric code (which contain the word 'UK'). I also reinstalled BBM but it didn't help.

Can anyone please please please help me fix this - i need my bbm and emails and would prefer to not switch to a local carrier :smileysad:

Re: BBM not working after OS 7.1 update

Hi and Welcome to the Community!!

You might be in serious trouble...typically, it is not safe to update your OS while your BB is roaming off of your home network...when you update, some services are disabled and can be restarted with ease, but often only while the BB is "on" the home network, not roaming. Nevertheless, let's give this a try...

I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):

1) Register HRT

  • KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
  • Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive to your Messages app

2) Delete and Resend Service Books

  • KB05000Delete the service book for the BlackBerry Internet Service email account from the BlackBerry smartphone
  • If you have no CMIME entry, then skip the deletion
  • KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
  • Please wait for "Activation" Messages, one per already configured email account, to arrive in your Messages. If you have no already configured email accounts, please wait 1 hour.

3) Batt Pull Reboot

  • Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.

Now, if the first thing does not succeed, then there's no use in proceeding...you may well be totally stuck. As I said, updating is just not recommended while roaming.

Good luck!

Re: BBM not working after OS 7.1 update

Hey guys, i got the same problem with humzaay.

I tried step 1 but i didn't receive any message

At step 2: i have no that kind of "CMIME" account so i skipped

Tried to send service books using method 1(method 2 and 3 weren't suitable for me) and i couldn't acquire service connection.

This is very very strange

In which case, the root problem is most likely that your BB is not "on" it's home network, and cannot refresh any services until it is again operating "on" it's home network. Not strange at all...quite normal actually.

FYI...please note that proceeding to step 2 requires the success of step 1...since that did not succeed for you, proceeding at all to step 2 was actually completely moot in your situation.

Good luck!

Re: BBM not working after OS 7.1 update

I had those exact problems even though I was not roaming - I just went ahead like normal and updated my Bold to 7.1 (I know it should have been done a LONG time ago, like back in 2012!) and suddenly had no BBM or email.  Followed your fixes and seem to have SOME (but not all) BBMs sending - depends on the contact, but my emails are up and running again.  Thank you.

Also I lost about 3 weeks' worth of calendar entries and 3 weeks' worth of BBM conversations, but I retrieved the former from syncing with my computer and the latter from back up.

I don't think I will ever try to update an OS again.

Any idea why only some BBM seem to be sending?  For some contacts, I just get a check mark and no D or R even though I know they're on.

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH.
