Re: BOLD: Uncaught exception:java.lang.NullPointerException - sms message icon disappeared!

Here's how to fix you BOLD:

Procedure:
Warning: You should not install BlackBerry® Device Software that is earlier than the version installed on the BlackBerry smartphone. Doing socould cause the BlackBerry smartphone to malfunction.
Before proceeding, make sure that the latest version of BlackBerry Device Software is installed on the computer by completing the following steps:
Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
ClickHelp.
Select About Desktop Manager from the menu and click the Device Software tab.
Confirm that the BlackBerry Device Software displayed is the latest version currently available from the wireless service provider*.
* Please go to http://www.rogers.com/techsupport from a computer to download the latest Blackberry Device Software available.
Warning: The following procedure will erase all data from the BlackBerry smartphone.
1) Back up the BlackBerry smartphone before proceeding (Instructions Below)
BlackBerry device users can perform a full or selective backup of the data using the Backup and Restore tool in BlackBerry Desktop Manager by completing the following steps:
Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer running BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Double-click Backup and Restore.
SelectBackup to perform a full backup or select Advanced to perform a backup of specific databases.
Choose a location to save the backup file, then click Save.

2) Blackberry Software installation process:
To perform a clean install of the BlackBerry Device Software using BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.1 - 4.3, perform the following steps:
Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Double-clickApplication Loader.
Click Nextto start the installation process.
Type your BlackBerry smartphone password, if prompted, and clickOK.
Click the check boxes next to the names of the applications you want to load, and then click Next.
ClickAdvanced, and then click the check boxes beside Erase all application data and Erase all currently installed applications.
ClickNext.
Click the check box next to Do not automatically backup the application data during the loading process (if prompted).
Clear the check box next to Backup and restore applications installed wirelessly (if prompted).
Click Next -> Finish.
When the process has completed, the message The loading operation was successful will appear. Click Close to return to BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Note: Desktop Manager 4.3 will display Delete all application data and Delete all currently installed applications.
To perform a clean install of the BlackBerry Device Software using BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.5 and 4.6, perform the following steps:
Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Double-click the Application Loader icon.
Click Add/Remove Applications.
Type your BlackBerry smartphone password and click OK.
Click the check boxes next to the names of the applications you want to load.
Click Settings, and then click the check boxes beside Delete all application data and Erase all currently installed applications.
Click Ok -> Next.
Click Finish.
When the process has completed, the message The loading operation was successful will appear. Click Main Menu to return to BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
Note: The Delete all application data and Delete all currently installed applications options are not available when using the Application Loader in BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.5. To workaround this issue, use the Application Loader standalone file by performing the following steps:
Open My Computer (or Computer on Windows Vista).
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader.
Run the Loader.exe file and follow steps 3 through 9 to complete a clean installation of the BlackBerry Device Software.

3) How to restore data or databases from backup files to BlackBerry smartphones

Procedure
To restore all the data in the backup file to your BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:
Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to your computer.
Open the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager.
Double-click Backup and Restore.
Click Restore.
Navigate to the backup file you want to restore to your BlackBerry smartphone.
Double-click the backup (.ipd) file (Created during Step1)
To restore specific databases in the backup file to your BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:

Additional Info

1.        Delete the Desktop [SYNC] service book from your BlackBerry smartphone.
On your BlackBerry smartphone, go to Options > Advanced Options > Service Book.
2.        Highlight Desktop [SYNC], display the menu and select Delete.

Re: BOLD: Uncaught exception:java.lang.NullPointerException - sms message icon disappeared!

I got this error as well, and I figured out what you have to do...whatever you open on your BB and this error message pops up, you have to wipe out everything from that folder via desktop manager.  if you back up your data regularly this is key.

-Go to Desktop manager (have the latest version)

-go to back up and restore

-Go to advanced

-then go to the folder that was giving you the issue (if u open address book and the error message came, go to that, or sms messages, go to that, mms, go to that...or if all of those folders doesnt work then clear all of them...)

-then clear it...

what happens is something corrupted was placed in that folder (usually when you get a new message during a sychronization) that u tried to open so you have to get rid of that corrupted file by wiping everything from that folder

to restore ur sms icons make sure that your sms and email inboxes are separated...go to options in any message folder (sms, mms, email)  scroll down to sms and email boxes, and change settings from combined or theme controlled to "separate"

if you save your sms messages on a regular, then you can restore your backup back to the phone once you get rid of the corrupted file...hope that works for you

Re: BOLD: Uncaught exception:java.lang.NullPointerException - sms message icon disappeared!

I have a BB Tour (BES) and just started experiencing this error.  I really would like to avoid wiping the whole thing.

I also have a missing sms icon - driving me nuts because I use text a lot.

This uncaught error occurs directly after the security screening on bootup.  So everytime I make a change to my settings and which requires a restart I get it directly after the security bar concludes.

What folder would need to be cleaned out for that?

Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!

Many questions....

1) What version of BBM? If not current, update.

2) What device OS version? If not current for your carrier, update.

3) What other apps are installed -- could it be a conflict with something else?

4) Have you yet tried the batt-pull reboot?

Just a few to start...
