Backspace/Delete button does not work !

Whenever I write/edit emails, SMS and I press "Backspace", it does not work. Nor does it react to "Del". Is there a way that this button or Backspace/Delete fuction could have been disabled or is this certainly a hardware error?

Try restarting the device, with the phone turn on, take out the battery for 30 seconds and reinstall the battery again.

Unfortunately taking out the battery for 1-2 min didn't help either ... :-(
