BlackBerry's sensors trying to be clever are just annoying

Hello,

Is there any way to switch off the "feature" on the BlackBerry devices that turns off the screen when it thinks you've put the handset down? It keeps turning off the screen every three seconds whenever I'm trying to use the thing, e.g. while typing a text; it's very annoying! If the sensors aren't accurate enough, don't wire them up to things just because you can. It's really not at all helpful.

Also, does anyone know what to do when the touchscreen stops working? It does this sporadically – maybe two or three times a week – and I just have to hit it, throw it about and swear at it for twenty minutes or so before it starts working again.

I think I'll be buying a Nokia next time. Far less problematic and it it's the only phone left that doesn't have an electric shock giving, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome-inducing touchscreen.

Yes, that wasn't an exaggeration. Whenever I touch the thing, it thinks I've put it down.

There is no sensor that when you "put it down" it places itself in sleep mode (unless you're placing it in a magnet enabled holster".

You are just touching the touchscreen, and the device goes black, in to sleep mode?

Re: BlackBerry's sensors trying to be clever are just annoying

It acts as though it's responding to a sensor. I have to shake the handset physically, which forces the screen to wake up. Not really a good user experience to have to give the thing a shake every time you've typed half a word! It's not when I touch the screen it goes to sleep, so if it's not a sensor, it must be some buggy timer code.

In your Options > Device > Screen/Display, what do you have the screen timeout set to?

Could you please change that to another amount and save, and let's see if the same bad bahavior continunes?

The backlight timeout was set to 30 secs; I've upped it to 45 secs. Will see how that goes, but it isn't the backlight that's going out, it's the whole screen turning off. Still, worth a shot I suppose. Thanks!

And shaking the device is the ONLY thing that will wake it up?

What about pressing the top edge mute key or ?

The top edge key and the mute key, no. Was trying the "?" key a suggestion, or was that a German "oder"-esque "or"?

So, again, the ONLY thing that will awaken the device is shaking it violently?
