Hi and Welcome to the Forums!,
From a PC, you can install any OS package to a BB via this procedure:
Note that while written for "reload", it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. You can even use a different carriers OS package by simply inserting, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML. Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:
Good luck and let us know!

Hi
This link is no different to what i have already tried....

Really? I see no similarity between the methods I provided and the link you first showed. Your first link is for a general information page. The links I provided further have links to the download portal. If something is not working, please be explicit...there are many steps to conduct, which are you on? How did the steps before there work out? Details and information help us to help you. Lack thereof only leaves us to guess...which helps no one.
Thanks.

The link i sent is the one i got emailed from RIM to upgrade my phone from 5 to 6 software
I click the link on that page that says check to updates.. i have my handset plugged into my laptop and i get through to until it says there is no updates avaliable
When i clicked the link you sent me it was asking me to download software 5... i'm really confused...

Sorry it's asking me to reload my operating system for a Storm... but i can't see why i would need to do this when i just want to update it....

Since you've provided me none of the steps I asked for, I must continue to guess...this will get tiresome for you pretty soon.
All I can guess is that you are looking at the wrong page. The instructions, while they may say Storm or something, work for ALL BB models. You must navigate to the download portal (it's a link within the instructions I linked for you) and find your desired OS package. Then download it. Then install it. Then do everything else that is in the instructions.
Again, if you would just be explicit and say where exactly you are, what exactly you are doing, and how exactly it is responding, I perhaps can help more. But, you leave me to guess...I really do want to help. But you need to help me to help you.
Thanks!

Well, it is the steps in what I provided that I need you to be explicit about. For instance:
brightongem wrote:From the link you sent me I clicked the link to download the desktop software to my laptop but yet again it didn't like it...
That one gives me a better hint about where you are in the process...not perfect, but much better. However, the result of "it didn't like it" doesn't provide me anything to guess from. How, exactly, did it present this result? An error message? The download started yet failed? Something else?
Further, in the process provided, there is no step that is explicitly for downloading the desktop software itself. Rather, it has an assumption that you already have that installed. What it instructs to download and install (to your PC) is the Device OS package that you wish to install to your BB.
Further still, there are step numbers in that process...here's the link again, just in case:
The step numbers in that are what I am talking about...I need to know where you are in that process in order to follow along and try to help figure out what is going wrong for you. But, if you are attempting to obtain the Desktop Software itself, then you may be off track already...again, I can't tell from what you are posting here.
Lastly...sarcasm was in no way intended. I honestly do want to help you. I'm sorry you assumed that I was being sarcastic.
Good luck.
