Blackberry Bold 9790 wont fully boot up!

So my phone just randomly died and when I tried to reboot it it would only load about 30%. Is there a way to fix this problem without deleting all the pictures and videos from my phone?

Please use plain text.

Re: Blackberry Bold 9790 wont fully boot up!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB):

  1. With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
  2. Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
  3. Remove the battery
  4. Wait 15 minutes
  5. Insert the battery
  6. Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does

This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.

It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:

  1. Obtain a known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
  2. Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens

The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem.

Good luck and let us know!

Re: Blackberry Bold 9790 wont fully boot up!

Thanks for the reply! I will do this right now. I've spoken to a cell phone repair company and the koodo kiosk from where I got my phone and they think its more of a software problem.

Without conducting any diagnostic activities, it's pretty much impossible to diagnose anything. The result of the tests I gave you will help to narrow down a cause...but it's always a deductive process.

Good luck and let us know!

Re: Blackberry Bold 9790 wont fully boot up!

Hey, so I tried the sequence you told me yesterday but it didn't work. I also currently do not have a spare BB. but I ordered a battery from ebay a week or two ago, so it should be coming in soon. is there anything else I can do to help sole this problem?

As in the first (4h15m) sequence? If so, then you do need to proceed to the 2nd sequence...but...

Purchasing anything will not quite achieve the same result as the exact sequence I provided to you; while rare, even a brand new battery can be defective. Rather, obtaining access to a truly "known good" other/identical BB and battery would be needed -- e.g., finding someone with an identical BB who does not have any issues. Trade batteries with them and see what happens in each device.

But, since you've already ordered it, your risk is that the battery is not the root cause at all; once you try this battery out, you will only truly know 50% of the deductive diagnostic results. Witness:

  • If your BB works, then your battery indeed was at fault.
  • But, iftheBBdoesnotwork, youwillnotquiteknowthattheBBisatfault...ifthereplacementbatteryhappensindeedtobedefective, youhavenowaytoknowifthatisthecaseunderyourconditions.

Goodluck!

Re: Blackberry Bold 9790 wont fully boot up!

So I went to school today and I asked my buddy if i can use his phone so I can try the second sequence you told me. Unfortunatly my phone still did not work with his battery. Are there anymore recomendations you can give me?

[ Edited ]

What about your battery in his BB? That part of the sequence is equally critical to the deductive diagnostic process we're doing here...

But, assuming your battery worked fine in his, the next thing for you to try is Safe Mode:

  • KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode

It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. If you successfully get it into Safe Mode, think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.

If you cannot get into Safe Mode, then there are no non-destructive things left to attempt...hopefully you already have a good backup of your data, because it's not likely recoverable from the BB itself. See these articles for different things to attempt:

Of course, if there is something wrong with the internal hardware itself, nothing OS or software-related can help. And that as well can only be diagnosed properly in-hand by a qualified hardware technician.

Good luck and let us know!

Re: Blackberry Bold 9790 wont fully boot up!

Yes, my battery worked fin in his phone. If I do manage to get it in safemode will I be able to back it up while it is in safe mode?

And to be honest I have no idea what I've done diffrently for it to have malfunctioned.

OK...then we know the full result of the deductive diagnostic process. Thanks!

You should be able to.

Technology devices, designed, built and operated by humans...perfection cannot be expected. Things go wrong...they just do. Hence the need to proactively backup ones data. The device itself is a commodity...but the data, that's priceless! But, backups are not a reactive nor an optional activity...

Good luck!
