I've been trying to get my Bold 9900 to create a Mobile Hotspot with my Playbook or anything for that matter, however it refuses to connect the device to the internet.
My Playbook connects to the Mobile Hotspot but has no internet connection.
My laptop connects to the Mobile Hotspot but has no internet connection.
The only way I can get tethering to work at all, is through Desktop Software and by using "Start Mobile Internet" with the settings
internet.fido.ca
fido
fido
I'm a Blackberry TSR and I can't figure this out.
The only option I have on the phone is to enable APN settings and put in that information
I've tried isp.fido.apn, internet.fido.ca
Everything.
I'm running Rogers 7.1 on my Rogers BB 9900 on Fido.
Double You Tee Eff.

I work for a telecommunications company in Canada. The APN's for tethering do not differ from "hotspot" apns.
There is no feature you can add just for "hotspot", because it's just tethering.
The APN's are the same for tethering and for "hotspot". Usually isp.apn or fido.isp.apn
So basically if your Blackberry works to tether it's gonna use the same apn for hotspot.
My Blackberry connects to the Fido network when the hotspot is turned on.
If it didn't connect I would get the "Contact Your Service Provider" Error message.
Clearly the tethering works and the phone goes into Modem mode while on Desktop Software.
@ 6Mbps Down and 1Mbps up at that
I was looking for maybe tips or tricks or something I might be doing wrong on the device itself.
Like some way to use a specific apn just like the Desktop Software.
*************************Also Fido will just tell me, Your device is not supported, Is there anything else I can help you with today?****************** lol

***********UPDATE***********
Internet Tethering now works through Bluetooth on the Playbook
@2Mbps down and 1Mbps up
However Mobile Hotspot still will not work.

bluetooth bridge connection does nto count as hotspot/tether
thats the differnce.
also bt connection is slower. Chances are if you have a plan < 1 gb you do not have tether included with your plan

I've been a technical support for two big Telcos in the US and in Australia, please don't get me wrong. APN settings is also being used for streaming and there are Data Plan restrictions that can be implemented by Carriers. Let me give you an example. Globe Telecoms provide Postpaid and Prepaid(Pay as you go) phones with data services on them. Data Plan differs from one another and there are plans that don't allow us to stream videos and radios because there is a separate Data Plan for streaming. Same thing goes with Prepaid and Postpaid Plans, we can only use the Mobile Hotspot feature thru Postpaid only and we are given a username and password aside from the default APN settings for Postpaid Subscribers.
So if you are assuming that Fido may tell you that the phone doesn't support the Mobile Hotspot feature, it may just be a fact that Fido didn't have the Bold 9900 because they only support 9360's Mobile Hotspot feature. Call Fido for you to know the reason why the Hotspot feature is not working for you.

@RonBob
fido is a subsidary of Rogers (and uses the same network). Rogers policy is 500 mb or less = no tethering. I'm certain that is fido's policy as well. 9900 is fully supported on Fido's network.

Yes, they must be supporting 9900 but there is no Official OS released version that supports Mobile Hotspot feature for it. Check the link below for their released OS versions.

@ignites: "fido is a subsidary of Rogers (and uses the same network)." -- Not really, I think. I own a dual SIM card handset, one Fido SIM card and the other one is on roaming with Rogers. When I drive to the Omega Park (near Montebello, QC) I completely lose the Fido signal yet the Rogers signal remains strong.

@icocea its the same network but fido's coverage is less (because its a lower tier brand). rogers just 'disables' some towers for fido to differentiate etc...
