I have this problem too, getting the run around from the retailer I got it from.
My trackpad also resores to a TrackBALL in the settings, and then is will not scroll at all.

I struggled for a long time with that problem. Its not software problem. Its just hardware. Particulary trackpad.
2 weeks ago I ordered some replacement part from internet. In 7 days it was delivered.
I changed whole keypad with trackpad and you cant imagine IT WORKS NOW PERFECT!!! ;-)
You must buy this too:

Mine started doing this a few weeks ago. Whenever I'm outside and sunlight hits it, it jumps to the bottom, and if I'm in a message, it will scroll quickly to the bottom. I pull the battery, smack it, wipe it, NOTHING WORKS!
I have a solution!! After using a BB for 11 years and having gone through 3 different generations from the thumb scroll 7230, to the roller ball tracker Curve, and now the 9900 with a trackpad, I will ditch it for T-Mobile's $200 credit to purchase a new phone! Amen.
The best BB I had was my original 7230. After that, every single one has had some type of issue. Sick of it.
I'm going to T-mobile, and as much as I hate to join the clones running iOs, I have no option. I'm finally turning into an iPhone user.
What a shame. BB, YOU LET ME DOWN! You couldn't come up with a decent replacement that would keep me in your eco system, so I have no choice. YOU ARE FIRED!

My 9930 user's unit recently began this behavior - mostly in the car (while stopped, of course), but also in wind () or when sitting down at the office - sometimes.
The cursor - and/or touchpad - and/or keyboard - and/or touchscreen - is sensitive to radio waves!
Sure enough, turning off the unit's wi-fi stopped the behavior. It's a workaround that works fine in the field unless a wi-fi network is needed.
