Life could be so simple. I take a pic; it gets stored as .jpg.rem on the BB Bold 9000, no matter if I disable encryption for media or not. I can get it over to my laptop using USB mass storage connectivity, but then what do I do to convert the .jpg.rem into a plain .jpg? The same applies to other files written by other apps, such as bbtracker exporting a .gpx.rem...
Thanks for any hints,

Hi and welcome to the forum!
You are correct in disabling the media encryption. However, sometimes you need to reset the device.
Try a 1 minute battery pull with the device on, replace and give it 5 minutes to fully reboot. Take a picture look at the properties.
This will not cause any data loss, but also, will not unencrypted the previous photos.

Thanks, but that didn't help. I tried as you explained (removed battery in "on" state, waited for two minutes, re-inserted, waited until boot was complete, logged back in, took photo). The new photo again is stored as a .jpg.rem.
Anybody else want to give it a shot?

Just checking you are using a media card yes?
And was it used in a previous phone?
Thanks

Here is a good point regarding the encrypted files:
The question asks if rem can be read on a PC. Quote from secutiry manager with RIM personnel
I have had many conversations with RIM regarding this. You can encrypt the card so it has various level of access while in another device, but if you don't have the desktop software installed (which our company doesn't) you can simply remove the card, put it in a media reader and BAM, full access.
You should be able to read the files in windows without conversion.
Thanks

I just turned off my media card, and took a picture, I still get a .jpeg. Can you wait until you get a media card to test further?
Thanks

Just though I'd get thig too you, in case I'm not around. I keep it handy.
For when you get your media card:
Here is the sizes per OS: Your Device OS determines the size of the media card you can have:

First a video!
http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-lecture-6-how
Format the card in the BB use :
OPTIONS -MEDIA CARD - menu key - FORMAT.
First make sure the following options are set:
Media Card window ON
Encryption NONE
Mass storage support ON
Auto enable when connected YES
On your media card do you have these folders?
Blackberry
Pictures
Music
Ringtones
Videos
Voicenotes
this is the folder structure that the Blackberry needs to allocate the media to.
You can then use the Drag and drop through Windows. Very quick and efficient, without overhead from the Media Manager.
One note. Some iTunes are DRM protected, and will not play on the BB.

Here is what I found out today, after adding a media card (8GB). Files saved to the pictures/ subdirectory on the card don't get encrypted. This is great as it at least lets me grab the pics directly off the card using USB mass storage support as well as the Media Manager (which I probably now no longer need anyway). Interestingly, when I ask an application such as bbTracker to store something to the card's documents/ subdirectory, those files will get encrypted. If I tell the app to save to pictures/, no encryption takes place. I suspect this may have to do with what the BB categorizes as "media files."
If I move a file from the encrypted device memory over to the card's pictures/ subdirectory, it gets decrypted during the copy operation and ends up unencrypted on the card.
While all this hassle would really not be necessary and again is a case in point regarding the BB's lousy usability, it at least lets me work around the problem for now.
Thanks to all who helped.
