Who do I contact to let RIM/Blackberry know about this bug?
This phone does not recognize numbers which have been added to the address book in the format (123)456-7890. It only recognizes them if theyre typed (123)4567890 or 1234567890. The dash (-) makes the numbers unrecognizable and I receive texts as +11234567890. Its funny because when you receive a call, the phone is able to recognize those same contacts which it cannot when you receive texts from them.
Its not a habit of mine to type numbers in that format but my first Telus phone automatically formatted them that way. So when I transfered my 200+ contacts to the Pearl, never did I have an issue. All my "new" contacts are typed 1234567890 so i dont have an issue.... I just dont feel like correcting 200+ numbers.... ugh......
Also, I tested this on colleagues phones at work (head office at Telus) and the Storm, Pearl and Curve do not have this issue. Except for the new Bold.

Hi I have the Bold 9700 from Telus most of my numbers in my address book have a hyphen in them and I am having no problems.

really! its been driving me nuts for the past 3 days. its adding +1 to all text messages I receive. As soon as I go into my contacts remove the hyphen, it automatically recognizes the number. When I put it back, it just displays numbers.
Do you mind trying something for me?
1) Edit one of your friends cell phone number to the format (123)456-7890.
2) Go into "SMS and MMS" and delete ALL msgs from him/her.
3) And ask him to send you a text message. (make SURE there is NO previous sent/received msg from them in your "SMS and MMS" inbox.)
How does the sender show up when you receive his/her text msg?
If anyone else has the 9700 please let me know as well!
Thank you!

I just had someone on howard forums confirm me he is having the same issue. Can anyone with a 9700 test by doing what I've written in the previous post?

I just got my BB Bold 9700 from Telus and when texting it too only displays phone#s of my contacts (+1604555777 as example) in my incoming text messages. Yet if I go into 'View Folders' and then 'Inbox > SMS Inbox the proper contact name IS displayed.
This is driving me nuts.

Hey everyone,
I'm glad I stumbled upon this forum. Unfortunately, I do not have an answer, but I too am having the same problem as all of you. I sync by BB 9700 with Outlook 2007. Outlook formats phone numbers like the following: +1 (123) 456-7890. If I receive an SMS from a contact with the said format, I will only see the phone number in the caller id field instead of the contact's name. To know who the person is requires you to hit the menu button wherein you will find the options to email or pin them. If I compose a new sms to the same contact, their name will show up in the caller id field rather then just their number.
I am fairly certain this is a bug that needs to be fixed by Blackberry since this happens only in the SMS area (when the SMS is received and not composed by the user) and no where else. I too have been going crazy trying to find a solution.
Hope we hear from RIM soon on this.

The ONLY solution ive found up until now is to remove the hyphen "-" inside the numbers.... buts its pain in the butt to go through 200 contacts. As soon as the "-" is not present, you will not have an issue and the phone will detect your numbers....
I've had the pearl, played/test on the Curve and Storm... and none of them have this issue. And on our phones its only for txt msgs. When you receive a call, its able to recognize those same contacts that its NOT able to recognize for text messaging.
I want to forward this issue to RIM but dont know where/who to contact......

Agreed, I am having this issue too. It's nagging me, but I just changed the people I SMS the most to get around the headache of doing that for all my contacts...
Still, it should be fixed RIM!!!

From what I've learned from on howardforums since I've opened this thread there as well (http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1590130) apparently this issue was arised if youve upgraded the software to the newest version a.k.a. .344

Hey darkestfenix or dakrestfenix - I'm not having the issue with my 9700...
I sync my contacts with google sync - not sure if that makes any difference!
