I've got some good news. When I called RIM technical support about this on Saturday and they told me the Enterprise Professional version did not support HTML I insisted that the rep escalate this to his supervisor on the theory that it made absolutely no sense to provide essentially a free version of Enterprise Server for individuals or small business that basically crippled one of the more significant features of the Bold (or the Storm for that matter.) He said he would do that on Monday.
Late Monday I got an email from him saying he had not forgotten me and would get back to me today. I did get a call today, and he informed me that everyone he spoke to agreed that they would be asking for trouble and negative reactions if they didn't address this issue. While he could not give me a date for a service pack release he made it quite clear that it was a priority and would be addressed.
So I'm pleased to report that RIM was very responsive and intends to fix this issue.

Hi,
I know that HTML emails are only available on handsets that have 4.5 OS or above.
The BES, if you are connecting to one (which it appears you are not) has to be a certain version too, 4.21 SP6 is the only one that supports Rich Content emails.
There is an IT policy that the BES needs toi set to ENABLE HTML emails!!!
So by default, this means that the BES (and all previous BES versions) do NOT enable HTML or Rich content emails!
So remember to ensure your Handset has 4.5+ (Bold's should have 4.60 at least so this should be ok...) and make sure that if you've connected to a BES that the BES has that IT policy enabled.
Just a few helpful pointers!
