A mail message icon is at the top when in 'phone' directory, or applications like 'memopad'. There are no active messages in mailbox or 'text' messages or any social media.
Try opening the Messages list, highlighting today's date, pressing the menu key and selecting mark prior opened from list. If the notification still remains, go to your Saved Messages folder and make sure there are no unread messages listed there. (Also reinsert your battery.)
