My BB used to be able to play the .wav files that I received by email from my office phone system. I just ran the BB updates it wanted to and now when I attempt to play a .wav file, media player opens but then says - an error has occurred attempting to play media. The media being played is of an unsupported format.
I found posts saying I needed to install the BB attachment service but I can't get the option to show in Desktop Manager even following the instructions to download and run the OS on the PC.

I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB):
1) Register HRT
2) Resend Service Books
3) Batt Pull Reboot
Hopefully that will get things going again for you! This reloads all of your Service Books, which control the services on your BB.
But...is this an exact .wav file that you previously played? Not just a .wav from the same source, but an old one that indeed used to work?

Thanks, I tried all you suggested even though I'd done all of that already. I've even tried downgrading all my software and no luck. No the file is not one I've specifically played on my BB before but it's from the same system, and other BBs the same model here at work will play them.

Same problem with me.
My BB Desktop software suggested I needed to upgrade to version 5.0.
So I did, now ALL media does not play. All videos, all sounds all mp3s all Wav files do not play.
All these were on the machine prior to the upgrade and worked fine, now NONE play and ALL give the error:
"an error has occurred attempting to play media"
I have done all of the above and these had zero effect. All media still giets "an error has occurred attempting to play media"

Check out my post and maybe that will help.

This post and all the suggestions (and T-mobile support by phone - 611) have not solve my inability to play WAV files sent to me as email attchments. The work arounds didn't.
Anyone know why RIM won't support WAV? A war with Microsoft maybe?
