Hi,

I am using BlackBerry Bold 9780 and have Documents to Go, Sheets to Go and Slides to Go for viewing Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents respectively. I saw in newly launched BlackBerry Curve 9220 there is an inbuilt app named "Documents to Go". By which anyone can view Words, Excel and Powerpoint documents and also PDF files for free. But I cannot able to view PDFs in my Bold 9780 which is more heavy and costly smartphone than Curve 9220.
Hence I want to know from where can I get a compact "Documents to Go" app for free and which is also a PDF reader.

Hello,

The only difference between the two is that one is the Standard level (no PDF reader) and the other is the Premium level (includes the PDF reader). With pre OS7 OS levels, the Standard edition was often bundled, but you had to pay for the Premium edition. But, with device OS 7.x, the Premium edition is supposed to be included. If you are on OS7, then you should already have the premium edition. What BB OS is your BB running?

Thanks for your reply. My BlackBerry 9780 is running on OS version 6.0 Bundle 2115. Can I able to upgrade to version 7? I am using "check for updates" in my phone but it's telling "Your BlackBerry is up to date". If I can able to, can you tell me the possible ways of upgrading? Also please suggest me what can I do for accessing PDF files in my BB.

If a carrier has released an OS7 package for your BB, you can indeed use it. Unfortunately, with "Airtel" listed as your carrier, I have no way to tell which, of the dozen or so, Airtel is yours, so I can't dig deeper for you. But you can... See this process...the link in step 3 step 2 is to all carriers...you will have to dig to find one that a) supports your specific model number BB and 2) has released an OS7 package...sorry, but I don't know which carriers have released what, so you will need to dig.

The simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):

1) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages

2) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed

3) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:

4) If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML (there will be at least one, perhaps 2)

5) Launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC

Don't forget to backup first, just in case.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

Failing that, your option is to purchase something that will render PDFs on your BB...there are many choices, but no "free" choices as far as I am aware (except for what RIM has bundled into OS7, of course).

Just for your information, my smartphone is not locked to Airtel carrier and it's an unlocked one.

Please see my correction above...in my haste, I mis-typed the step number for the download portal to dig through. Apologies.

FYI -- In the situation as so far described, unlocked or not is not relevant. Any carriers OS package can be used on any same BB model number on any other carrier (via deletion of VENDOR.XML files). The BB being unlocked or not has no bearing on this factor. The sole purpose of unlocking is to actually use the BB on a different carrier that the one for which the BB was originally manufactured. But, even a locked BB can use a different carriers OS package.

Hi sdgardne,

I have followed the procedures you have told but couldn't able to find OS7 for BlackBerry Bold 9780 in any carriers (not in Asia Pacific where I belong, but also in UK, US carriers). Hence no luck for upgrading to OS7.

However I downloaded the latest OS6 version which I got (BlackBerry Handheld Software v6.0.0.863 (Multilangauge)), but it's showing as a downgraded version compared to the version in my BB. Hence I didn't installed. Afterwards I went to Documents To Go Premium one and now I can able to view PDFs.

Anyhow thanks a lot for your detailed description which helped me to learn quite a few things regarding this.
