Now that Google Sync is dead, I think I need to sync my google calendar and contacts with my bb using BIS.  Mail is syncing correctly.  But BIS gives me no option to sync calendar and contacts... there is no box to check for these.  

What am I missing?  Should I be looking elsewhere other than BIS?

BB 9790 OS 7.1.0.523.

PS I have examined KB24204 for help, but it tells me there should be a Calendar box to select for synchronizing.  There isn't.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You may have to remove the email account through the email setup application and readd.

If you can't readd the email account
you can head to blackberry.com/integrate from the device and try to setup the email from there.
You can also login to https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=rogers from a computer and see if you can setup the sync options.
