Problem connecting to wifi with Bold 9780

Hi,

I have a Blackberry Bold 9780 and a PCCW pre-paid SIM card with 3G in Hong Kong.

I have a wifi connection at home as well as office.

I have connected my phone to the wifi at home. It displays the name as <mobile operator> - <wifi connection name>. Now when my data services is switched off, I am unable to open any web page or send msgs via whatsapp.

At the same time, if my data services is switched ON & if I am in the wifi connected area, I am able to send and receive msgs / open web pages. But the problem here is that my money from the prepaid card gets cut. Its picking up the mobile internet.

The same is applicable when I tried from my office wifi as well.

Please could you suggest a solution to this since this is eating up my mobile internet?

Regards,

Amrita

the perfect configuration is:

- Data Services ON
- Mobile connection OFF
- WiFi ON

I dont think you are connected to any of these WiFi. May I know the error message you get when you browse without mobile data?

I'm currently connected to  my wifi. I switched off my dataservices.

Now when I try to browse through; I get the error saying that 'A cmmunication failure has occured. The server may be busy, please try again letter. If the problem persists contact your service provider'.

But in this case; I won't be able to receive or make any calls.

I need to have both active - mobile and wifi working together. Is it possible? Or do I need to keep switching between the networks?

Re: Problem connecting to wifi with Bold 9780

you cannot have phone calls & force all data to go through the WiFi.

what you can do is :

solution A
no phone calls, and Data through WiFi
- Mobile Network OFF
- Data Services ON
- WiFi ON

or solution B
phone calls available
data mainly through the WiFi, and a bit through the cellular network
- Mobile Network ON
- Data Services ON
- WiFi ON

Re: Problem connecting to wifi with Bold 9780

Hi,

What I  meant was; is this only for BB Bold 9780 or for all models of BB?

Or is this coz of the mobile operator?

The reason why I'm asking about mobile operator is coz when I was in India; my phone used to work on wifi and I could receive / make calls. I didn't have to switch between Wifi and Mobile Network.

Re: Problem connecting to wifi with Bold 9780

my post was about all BlackBerry phones that can do WiFi.

And what you are describing from when you were in India is my "solution B".
