Phone turned itself off.
Tryed plugging it into a wall charger and laptop usb cable to charge, but each time the red time stay constant for about a minute and then it changes to flashing four times quickly then a short pause and then flashing four times again (and it just repeats this over and over again.)
Please can you let me know what I need to do to make it work.

What happens when you press the red power -on button?
Check the Blackberry has not gone into 'bedside mode' press the alarm clock icon on the main menu and then the Blackberry menu button and you will see the status bedside mode or not.
Also check the 'Auto On/Off' setting it might be enabled, this is via the 'options' spanner/wrench icon.

When i press the red power button it just stays off - screen is still black.
I'ts only when I put it into the charger that the red light starts flashing.
How can I check if my BlackBerry has gone into bedside mode if I can't turn it on?
Same with the other suggestions, how can I check the 'Auto On/Off' setting?

Someting similar happened to me when the battery went extremely low, I placed it on mains charge for a while and it started to come back to life, take the battery out first and put back in, then leave on mains charging for a while, then try the red on/off button.
If possible try out another bold battery from another user to prove whether its the phone or the battery.

Ok.. what I did
On XP (in this case in a parallels VM) I uninstalled all blackberry related software giving me a clean slate.
I DID NOT install desktop manager.
loader.exe /noJVM and selected 'next' when it said device unknown
This failed half way though... but thats ok as it then had a '507' whitescreen reboot loop!
loader.exe (this time without the /jvm bit)
it saw the serial number so just followed the onscreen instructions
battery left in the whole time as was the sim card.
I hope this helps someone else

@ adurbe, i have tried what u suggested but it still didnt work. the problem is that my bold cannot be seen by the computer when u plug it using a usb cord. it blinks 5 times ans the screen is black (4 short times and 1 longer times) i tried your method, instead of showing me device unknown, it gave me options likeport COM3 or detcect port and with any it tell me to connect my phone. meanwhile the phone is connected. pls help me

Are you on an XP machine? I know the drivers for vista/windows 7 behave differently which is why you might be seeing different things.
Have you tried plugging it in and using JL_Cmder (quick google will find it, I have v 1.9.0)
What does JL_Cmder see/not see?

@ adurbe thanks for your swift response. I have both XP and vista. I have tried it in the two but still same messages( device cannot be detected). i have also tried the JL_Cmd and it still does not recognise my device. it flashes 4 times then pause then 1 time. it repeats the sequence continiously. pls kindly assist me. thanks

what you are trying to do is to break the cycle.
Does XP recognise the device at all within (if possible please stick to XP as I am more familiar with the system)
you can find this out by right click on 'my computer' --> Manage --> Device Manager
Look through and see what you can see under USB controllers (will be denoted as 'RIM')
