Trackpad, keyboard and typing issues. BB Bold 9900.

My BB has been behaving weirdly since I returned from Lanzarote about 4 weeks ago.

First of all I can use the trackpad for some things and have to touchscreen for others. I am not a big fan of touchscreen so this is annoying.

The phone is really inconsistent.

To add to these problems, its also going crazy when I send any type of message: BBM, WhatsApp, Viber or text.

Before I've finished typing a message odd letters and symbols are randomly being sent making reading my messages or tweets impossible. Any suggestions?

This handset is a recent upgrade and I've only had it since Jan 2013.

I want to take it back to Vodafone to be honest but not sure how far I'll get.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:

  • KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode

It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.

If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.

But if the behavior continues in Safe Mode, then you may need to consider more drastic actions -- WIPE, OS Reload, BBSAK Wipe/Reload, and the "Bare Bones" OS Reload Process. To prepare, you should be sure that you have a full backup to your PC...please review the Backup link in my auto-sig on this post for instructions.

So, what fix did you use? My BB bold 9930 (new from Verizon online 10-15-13) has had the same odd keyboard/trackpad issues since I arrived in Las Vegas four days ago (from Sacramento, California) to visit family. Aaargh, so frustrating. It has worked perfectly fine up to this point.

:::::::::::The Fix:::::::::::

Well, I Found the solution on how to pin point the problem and go by fixing it, I searched the net and found this post by SawyerrKen, it made the most sense to me, I followed his instruction and found out that my "sym" key was sticking once I re attach the keybored cable, I fixed it temporary for now, but the long term fix is getting a new keyboard!......

I had the exact same problem as described by the OP, right to his last word. But mine happened because the phone fell from the table.

I tried upgrades and downgrades of OS and even tried the crackberry approach to resurrecting nuked berries. None solved the problem.

The FIX: I took the phone apart and turned the phone on, then disconnected the keypad from the mainboard and the trackpad worked well. It means the problem is with the keypad. When I connected back the keypad I noticed my camera application came up. That means the camera botton must have gotten jammed in the fall. So I pulled out the soldered camera button from the keypad sticker and that solved it. Phone now works as normal but I had to sacrifice my camera button. Not much of a sacrifice to me as I dont even take pictures, I am however used to that button as the shortcut to my BBM :-)

So if you are experiencing same problem, I think there is a key jammed in the keypad. Best way to find out which key is to disconnect and connect the keypad to the mainboard while phone is On. Which ever key is jammed will be depressed on connecting back to the mainboard and you will see the key/letter on your screen. Which ever key you see, that's the culprit :-)

Hope this helps someone out there. I actually bookmarked this page 3 days ago and refreshed every now and then to see if anyone would have come up with a solution. Well, funny how things turned out.

P.S: Remember for the 9650 its 4 screws at the back, 2 screws at the front on top of the screen. Carefull when you are removing that earpiece face so you dont crack your screen or leave dents.

All the best
