Thanks for this explanation. I was going nuts trying to get the new message icon off of my homescreen. Finally got it off when I deleted a browser message.

I have an icon that just popped up on the home screen. It looks like a phone and is located between the volume/ringer icon and the timestamp. I have no text, voicemail, or other msgs. I can't find a pic of this icon in any of the Blackberry Bold 9650 manuals I've looked in. Please help! I can't get rid of this thing.

Could be a missed call notification.

Thanks for the post, but there's nothing in my call history that I missed. Thanks again!

Look in your main Messages list or SMS list for the Missed Call notification.
And, it might not be a missed call, just guessing here by your description of the icon.
If you could post an actual screen shot, it would be helpful.

Here's the screen capture of the icon. It's the one that looks like a phone. I've checked every msg log I can find and nothing so far.

Ok, I'm ready to give up. I'm unable to attach the screen shot. Geesh!

Why are you unable?
Read the instructions in my link above to post a screenshot. What part of those instructions are tripping up over?
