I have tried to set up the bold 9900 as a wireless router for my laptop. i was able to use a cable to connect my laptop to my bb but the internal modem failed in my laptop and now i want to use a wireless connection where my bb is the router and my laptop connects to my phone. does it do this?

Hey gskerr,
Welcome to the forums.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 cannot be used as a wireless modem.
These articles should also help with tethering your BlackBerry as a modem:

I use my blackberry 9900 each and every day as a wireless router. It is called a mobile hot. All my computers in my house connect to my phone for internet. In fact I am using it right now to write this message. Both PC and Macs connect to my phone wirelessly.

Got it in October 2011. Using 7.1 software bundle. Originally I was on 7.0.
It wasn't obvious to find. I just found it a few weeks ago. I was always told that you couldn't make it into a hotspot. Technical support didn't know.
I clicked the magnifying glass on home screen a few weeks ago and typed in hotspot in search line. Within minutes it was running. What is great about it is that blackberries compress the data going out so much compared to iphones that you don't use alot of data.

After you type in "hotspot", you likely will see Options (1) and Help (33). If you choose help, there is lots of information on this topic. The first 4 items that come up pretty well cover everything you will need to know to get started.

this is super, thank you. very much appreciated, I'll let you know how it goes. I am buried in work for the next 2 weeks but will get it done right after that.

Gskerr did you ever get this to work, I could not get Options (1) or Help (33). I only received Help (2) when searching for "hotspot" which was not much help as it was how to connect to a open ATT Hotspot via the Bold WiFi connection.
Cleanshine if you have a help article you can send that would be most helpful.
Thanks.
