The manufactuer will never lock the phone unless they lock it to a certain carrier.  This is the way that carriers will use to keep customers using their services, because the phone is locked to that carrier

Hi, little confused too! I had asked my friend living in Uk to bring me a blackberry, while he was arriving here. he brought Brackberry and it is branded (t-mobile). according to that person the cost is 174 pounds. please help me, from where  I may check the geneuness of the set (it may be lost or stolen) to prevent my self from any mishaps in future! more over is there any difference of the hardware quality of the sets like the quality for africa or asia is lesser that that of america or uk! Best regards! please help me!

You can call your mobile service provider (ufone) with whom you'll have BlackBerry Internet Service, and ask the to confirm the IMEI and PIN are clear -- not suspended nor blocked due to being reported lost or stolen.

my blackberry bold 9780 won't accept my BTC sim card. it keeps on asking for a MEP code in which to unlock. i carried it to my service provider and they couldn't assist me. i am asking if you can assist me with this problem because i would hate to waste my money spent. the following shows my phones information:
