Communicating: My Top 5

Community Manager on 10-07-2009 01:50 PM

When I was in junior high school (Warning: dating myself here!) I can recall my mother lamenting over why anyone who wasn't a brain surgeon would need a mobile phone.  Flash forward a few years, that mother - who is not a brain surgeon - bought a mobile phone.  Now I get SMS messages, IMs, random wall notes on social networking sites from my mother, and of course phone calls from my mother...all from her mobile phone.

It is simply amazing how communication has changed in such as short time (honest, junior high school was not THAT long ago!). Here are the top 5 ways (in order of use) I communicate with friends and colleagues on my BlackBerry® smartphone:

  1. Instant Messaging
Pick your favorite (or use them all) and file on home page or in your Instant Messaging folder on the main page.
  2. BlackBerry Messenger
Get there quickly from the home page by typing "n"
  3. Social Networking
Whether you are into Facebook or one of the microblogging platform you can keep in touch with friends from your device with many social networking applications. I love to post photos and change my status update to keep my friends in the loop. Check out the Inside BlackBerry blog for a look at the BlackBerry Facebook Application.
  4. Email
Get there quickly from the home page by typing "m"
  5. Phone
Yes, I even go "old-school" from time to time and call someone! Of course the quickest way to do this is to click the Green phone button.

What are your top 5 ways to communicate using your BlackBerry smartphone? Are they similar to mine? Or vastly different?

I also lost all my contacts from my Blackberry trying to sync to my Mac computer.

I am so upset I cannot begin to tell you. This is just wrong. How come they offer something that is dangerous for us users...this is very unresponsible!!!!!!

I called RIm technical support and I was told that unfortunally there is nothing to be done. I lost everything!

MAC + BLACKBERRY USERS = DON NOT TRY TO SYNC YOUR CONTACTS !!!!!!!!

Is there a quick solution to this problem? When trying to access a web page through the browser, this error message shows up.

A communication failure occurred with the selected Mobile Date Service. The server may be busy, please try again later. If the problem persists contact your administrator.

Please provide any feedback.

Thanks,

I have downloaded various apps from the BlackBerry App World, but they are not showing up in my Downloads folder.  I can only get to them from My World in the Blackberry App World application.

Any suggestions on how to get these to show up?  Is there a preference that I have to change?

Thank you.

Having gone into the smartphone era, I was given an unlocked 9530. It worked well for the first 2 weeks, now the edge is not showing in CAPS anymore. My service provider says the phone is registered on the network, but something may be wrong with the instrument.

I am in Trinidad and cannot return it to the person who gave it to me.

Can someone here please asssist me. i tried everything on the site already.

vanessa9267,

You will need a data plan or a plan that includes IM and the specifics of how you are charged for that are determined by your provider.

When trying to download an app, I get the message that I don't have enough application memory.  I don't have alot of stuff downloaded.  My application memory is zero, my other memories are 99% available.  The Help screen says to go the My World screen and make changes, but I don't seem to have a My World screen.

Is there a way to manage, (increase), my appication memory?

where's this My World screen?

Peter Rockwell,

Your BlackBerry has  a limited amount of application memory and an expandable amount of media memory.  It is best to manage the application memory by occasionally cleaning out applications that you don’t use to free up space for the ones that you do use or wish to download.  To do this go to Options > Applications or Options > Advanced Options > Applications and choose applications to delete from your BlackBerry.  You can simply roll over the name of the application, press the BlackBerry Menu Button and choose delete to remove them.

Once you have removed some applications you can check your memory in the Options > Status screen under File Free or under Options > Memory under Application Memory.  To find your My World icon, open BlackBerry App World and you will see My World on the far right at the bottom.  You can also manage your applications from this section.

seyaks,

If your device uses a SIM card you should be able to find this setting under Options > Advanced Options > Sim Card, then press the BlackBerry Menu Button and choose “Edit Sim Phone Number”.  Which BlackBerry do you have?
