Power Saving Tips for your BlackBerry SmartPhone

Community Manager on 08-11-2009 10:50 AM

power.jpgIt might be a stretch to call this "going green", it isn't on par with using reusable bags or replacing your light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs, but these are a few tips tohelp you maximize your batter charge!

Network Connections
Turn off unused connections when not in use for example: Wi-Fi ® Bluetooth® (Manage Connections)
Use “Auto On/Off” (Options>AutoOn/Off)
Use a single mode only. Choose 2G or 3G rather than 2G and 3G. (Options>Mobile Network)

Applications
When exiting, be sure to close the app, not leave it running in the background. (close with the ESC key, the rounded arrow not red power end key. Or, choose Menu button menu_key_bb_bullets_39752_11.jpg and scroll down to close)
Log out of applications when they are not needed.

Screen/Keyboard
Reduce Backlight Timeout (Options> Screen/Keyboard)
Reduce Backlight Brightness (Options > Screen/Keyboard)
Use a device holster (this turns off LCD automatically when you put your device away)
Set Audible Roll for your trackball to mute (Options> Screen/Keyboard)
Key Tone Off (Options> Screen/Keyboard)

Camera
Turn off flash (Camera > Options)
Set picture size to Small (Camera > Options)
Set Color Effect to Normal (Camera > Options)
Set Picture Quality to Normal (Camera > Options)

GPS
Turn off GPS when not required (Options > Advanced Options  > GPS)
Use the zoom out function to get the largest viewable area that you can still use usefully.

Browsing

Close browser when finished using (close with ESC key, not red End key)

This is pretty big list, do you have any additions? Or maybe just some general "green" tips for life?

To piggyback on the backlight timeout, I turned off Dial From Home Screen so I could use my keys as hotkeys. So when I'm done using my BB, I press the K key to lock my screen and that turns off the screen.

I also put my phone into standby mode (using the button on the top left) after locking it.

Unplug any chargers that aren't in use. Chargers that are plugged in use electricity, even if the device is not plugged in to it!

Can you tell me what the maximum media memory the 8350i curve is capable of?  I'm talking about the micro sd card slot behind the battery.  The phone came with a 1gb card which is next to nothing in songs and video.  I'd like to install a 16gb card but make sure it works first.  Thanks, John.

@starLess-xo
if your sister changed the password, she should remember the new one. Otherwise, she will lose everything on the device after 10 tries.

@jest1
you are so right, I recently discovered that. I am buying multiplug with an on/off buttons so I can plug all my chargers on it, and turn everything off when I don't use them.

@jwindley
please read the following article from the public knowledge base :
