Ringtones Lesson 2

Community Manager on 06-23-2009 08:32 AM

One of the many great things about a BlackBerry® smartphone is that you can set up individual ringtones for the various incoming messages or tasks (email, IM, and other alerts) as well as custom ringtones for individuals as discussed in the previous post on Changing Your Ringtone: The Basics . This can help you to set priorities to your daily tasks by notifying you that you have a new e-mail message rather than a Facebook alert, or a meeting coming up and not an IM.

How to Personalize your Ringtones by Task
(Note: this is based on BlackBerry®  BoldTM smartphone)

Your BlackBerry comes with some preset Sound Profiles - Vibrate, Quiet, Normal etc. However, you can change the settings within any of these to fit your preferences, or set up a new profile.

  • Find the Sound Profile Icon, open and find the "Advanced" option to make changes.
      sound profile.jpg
  • Choose a profile that you would like to edit - for example "Normal"- or click on the BlackBerry menu button and choose "New Profile"
  • A page with a list of alerts, types of messages, and application or tasks that use ringtones will be shown on this page. You can make changes to any of these.

Choose one task/alert/message (for example BlackBerry Messenger Message) by clicking on it.

There are a variety of settings that you can adjust, as well as you can have different settings for in and out of your holster (BlackBerry case). To make changes to a particular setting:

  • Scroll down to the item you want to change
  • Click the BlackBerry Menu button, choose "Change Option"
  • Highlight your setting and select.

Note: If you are changing the ringtone or volume you will hear the ringtones as you scroll over the options.

When you have made all the changes you want to make to Ring Tone, Volume, Number of Beeps, Repeat Notification and Number of Vibrations click once more on the BlackBerry Menu and choose "Save". You can do this for any of the items on the profile. In fact. you could  potentially have a different ring tone for each type of message, calendar alert etc. Personally, I have set my IM clients with one ringtone, my personal e-mail with another, and work e-mail with a third variation.

I'm new to the Blackberry world. I have the 8900. I"ve figured out how to set a specific ringtone for each of my contacts. Now, I need help with changing that contact's sms text tone. I heard that you can't set specific text tones for contacts, and I need to know if this is true. If there is no way I can it will be extremely disapointing! Maybe there is an app or an add-on that would enable it? I need help!

hey mellysa4 - This is a bit off topic...why don't you head over to the Support Forums and ask your question of our community. Try a search - you may find that the answer has been asked and answered too!

I would like to assign one ringtone to all the contacts in my address book so that when I receive a call from a number that isn't in my address book it rings differently. Do I have to assign each ring tone indivudally or can I " mass assign" them? I have a Curve 8330.

confused with Sound Profiles with OS 4.7 on my Tour.

1. Why does a custom user ringtone ring when Profile is in Vibrate mode.

2. what is the difference between All Alerts Off & Silent.

3. what is the volume differential between normal, loud & medium.

TIA

Noah Fingway,

I am unable to reproduce the issue where your device plays a custom ringtone instead of vibrating.  Do you have any exceptions set in your profiles?  Check out this document.  "All Alerts Off" means you will get no notifications and Silent can be modified to include notifications.

hope this helps

I'm a new 8900 user, and I have e-mail questions.  First, is it possible to have a separate folder for sent items, like I have in Outlook?  Right now Received and Sent Items all appear in the same folder.  Second, I have two accounts on my phone, one for my home e-mail address, and another for my work e-mail.  Can the phone be configured to download new messages on either or both accounts only on demand, rather than automatically?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hey

I have an idea for futher customization of ring tones, specifically the vibrate feature.

I believe that tempo/rhythm customization of vibration depending on the situation would improve the blackberry product.

Eg.  Phone calls' vibrations are more rapid since they require immidiate attention.  Texts and BBMs could have a recognizable pattern/pace to the vibration.  E mails could also have customizable tempo/rhythm.

Since most people carry blackberrys in their pockets, and often on vibrate, it would be a more user friendly way for people to immidately recognize what sort of communication is coming their way, rather than waiting to see if it vibrates once, twice, or thrice.

@tb47

The sent items are designed to be shown with all other emails so your best bet, when you want to see the sent items, is to press “alt-O” to see just the sent items in the Messages list.  As for your second question, the device will automatically download your emails unless you block them from arriving using the firewall under Options > Security Options > Firewall.  Your work email could be listed as Enterprise Mail or BlackBerry Internet Service and your personal email is almost certainly BlackBerry Internet Service.  Bear in mind that these firewall settings apply to all emails of that type, meaning that if you had a Yahoo! and a Gmail account, neither would arrive on your BlackBerry.  Hope this helps  J
