OS 4.2.2 is the latest OS offered by AT&T, and that web-based online upgrade process will ONLY upgrade to the latest OS offered by your carrier.
However, you can upgrade to OS 4.5 using another carrier's release of the OS:
That is the latest verion available, and it is a good release. Follow the directions in that link, as posted and in order as posted, and you will be fine.

You really won't lose any functionality. I am on AT&T, and have been seen no problems with it. Make sure you follow those directions as posted, and again, in order as posted.

Sounds good, thanks for the wuick answers. I read on that link that people mentioned reformatting their memory card after the upgrade. Is there any truth to this ?

Yes, some users need do need to do that, and you might ought to do so after your upgrade before it were to become an issue.
Read this for details, but it really is as simple backing up your media card to your PC, reformatting the card IN the new OS, and then moving back to the card ONLY the media files (and not any of the 'BBthumbs.dat' files (which were created in OS 4.2).
