As this BB is new I'm very new to the service.

Today I couldn't Direct Connect OR hear anything when I made a call.

The signal light to the top right of the Blackberry name was blinking red and sometimes blinks blue. Can't find anything in the BB guide so maybe its a Nextel signal. 

It stopped and all seems to work fine as I write this but I'd like to know what cause the problem and  what the red/blue blinking light means. Our other nextel phone was working without a problem so I don't think that it was a Nextel system problem.

Hi and welcome to the forums!

It sounds like you are describing the LED indicator.

Red is a message alert

Blue is Bluetooth

Green is your coverage indicator

Amber is low battery or charge

You were probably in Bluetooth headset mode and couldn't hear.

I am similar problem. The led is blinking red, i dont have any email or texts. I  checked running apps and dont have facebook or yahoo messenger etc running. what could it be? Tried battery pull, it would restart blinking green but soon turn back to red. i turned of coverage indicator. any ideas what else could cause it to blink red?

what if your blackberry nextel's wireless network won't come on or continues to say OFF ... what do you do to turn it on ??
