I have had 2 Blackberry Curve 8520 supplied to me in the last 3 days and in both cases the trackpad has stopped working within a day.
Does anyone know if this is a design problem or if I have just been unlucky to get 2 devices from a bad batch?
Unfortunately, the BB is useless without the trackpad as you cannot navigate around the screen.

I'm on a shared/family plan and my husband's phone does that. We've been on the phone with Tmobile support for 3hrs today trying to get them to just exchange the handset but I had to remove and re-download the blackberry desktop manager and go through all sorts of hoops and tests before finally at 12:15 a.m. they agreed to exchange our phone.
The trackpad is completely stuck. Removing the battery didnt' help and it's been frozen since yesterday morning, now 2 days. YOu can press the trackpad like clicking "enter" but vertical or horizontally it doesn't do anything.
Tmobile claimed that it was a software issue.

I had 2 replacements before I got one that worked - I suspect it is a hardware fault otherwise more people would have the same problem.

I was so excited to purchase my first Blackberry from T-Mobile. I had been wanting one for years. I was so dissapointed when after 2 months of service my trackpad is experiencing the same problems. T-Mobile is pretending like the problem is unique. I have called them 3 times without any acknoweldgement that there is a problem with the phone. This is really upsetting to me because they want to replace my phone with a used phone. I didn't purchase a used phone, I purchased a new one. I had a $200 phone for Metro PCS prior to this Blackberry and it lasted 3 years. What a disapointment.

ive had the same issue with my blackberry trackpad, first time i got it sent away they stated it was a broken circuit board and outwith warrenty,it got sent away for a second time and they re-flashed the software and sent it back,it worked for about 2 hours and stopped again, its now been sent away for a third time to get a complete replacement..this is clearly not a software problem after a couple of months more likely a mechanical problem with the trackpad.
hopefully blackberry will acknowledge this and at least do a recall on a certain batch, first blackberry ive had and its been a nightmare!

My trackpad has not been working. I also have a BBerry Curve 8520. It has been frozen on and off, up to several hours at least. I cannot move horizontal or vertical, only click. This seems to be the problem with everyone else. Has anyone actually been able to fix this problem instead of getting a new one?

Sorry I have no answers... I have the same problem and noted that when I did a google search over 460,000 searches had been entered re "Blackberry Curve 8520 trackpad problems"
I think somone at RIM need to give us solutions to this problem at this stage,... and fast.. or provide a softwaare fix that would enable users to bypass the trackpad if faulty so that they could navigate through the menus to at least have an option.. otherwise the BB is not such a "smartphone" if you cant use it! I have had 5 of these phones. 2 this week. and they are sending me number 6 in the next three days. they wont let me get out of this phone, kind of miserable. but my trackpad on the one before this one and this one as well have stopped working within 5-6 days. and then will work for 20 seconds and lock up on what ever i was last on. get the bold. i heard the 5.0 software is much more stable and have a roommate with one and he has had no problems what so ever.
