My battery on my 8520 had doubled in size and i also got the white screen of death, but the battery still worked. but i had enough of charging it all the time, so i brought a new battery. the battery is the right one as ive looked it up several times and my chargers are working. however when i put my new battery in and put it on charge, the phone will not turn on and says there is no battery as the symbol comes up of a battery with a red cross. please someone help !!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
First off, this worries me:

If you mean that it had bulged out beyond it's original physical dimensions, then it may well have leaked something into your BB itself, damaging it. You should inspect the contacts and the battery compartment inside your BB for any visible corrosion...if there is such, it may be damaged beyond repair.
Beyond that, you can try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB):
This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem. Note that this has nothing to do with a "new" battery...while rare, new batteries are subject to a defect rate greater than zero...a truly "known good" (e.g., a friend with an identical BB and a battery that you know works fine) battery is needed...just be careful about transferring any corrosion to your friends BB...that would not be a nice thing to do to them.
Good luck and let us know!
