Mine has been doing the same thing, progress stopped at 7%, and stuck trying to back up social feeds at 0%. I don't really need to back up social feeds, but there seems no way to skip it. I am going to France tomorrow, so I really need this issue fixed. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Having the same problem as the OP and tried the safe mode option. Put the phone into safe mode and it works but it still comes up with the software update screen and I cant get off it. Also it will not connect to my computer when it is doing the software update.

Yes, this is exactly where I have got to as well. I seem to be in a Catch 22 with this: I can't fix the upgrade problem without connecting to Desktop Manager, but I can't make the Desktop Manager connect to the phone. I've tried the recommended fixes for connectivity problems, to no avail. I can't do a hard reset because I can't get away from the Software Upgrade screen (the one we are all having problems with). A soft reset just gets me back to that screen, even in safe mode.
To be fair, this infinite "connecting" problem has been ongoing for me. I have not previously sought a solution, so I suspect it is now too late for this particular phone. Am I looking for a new phone? I fear so, yet apart from not connecting to the Desktop Manager, it was working satisfactorily before I tried to do this software upgrade. Rather disappointed.

Thinking the same as Hexy89. New phone for me despite my blackberry being only 7 months old unless it fixes itself.

The best advice is to call your mobile tech support, and ask that this issue to be escalated up to RIM level tech support. Perhaps they know of some working solution.
Meanwhile, I am asking some friends to look at these threads for any further advice.
