Blackberry OS 5 Upgrade to OS 6 on Curve 3G

[ Edited ]

Hi everyone! I've been wanting to upgrade my OS 5 to OS 6 and was wondering if I'll lose all the data on my phone (photos, messages, address book) once I upgrade to the latest OS? Thank you! :smileyhappy:

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!

Major updates actually wipe out all of your data. Hence, they include a backup (before) and a restore (after).

From a PC, you can install any OS package to a BB via this procedure:

Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. You can even use a different carriers OS package by simply inserting, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML. Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • KB19915How to perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software

Good luck and let us know!

If you performed the backup via your PC, then you can restore from that file. Search your entire hard drive for a file with IPD extension (*.IPD). The date/time of the search results will tell you which files are viable for your use...if one has a date/time around the time you performed the update, then that is the backup that was created at that time. Use the Desktop Software to perform the restore:

Good luck!

Re: Blackberry OS 5 Upgrade to OS 6 on Curve 3G

ok i've found the file on my computer. when i go into the blackberry software and click restore it opens up a menu for me to click the file that i want to use to restore my info. but, it only shows the file that the backup is stored in; not the actual ipd file. and all the options below are grey. what now?

You mean that it's showing you the folder that the file is in, right? As such, here's what is going on. The software is showing you the contents of the folder that it's looking in...and your file is not there. So, you need to do one of two things.

1) Move your IPD file into the folder that the Desktop Software is looking at

-- OR --

2) Change the folder that the Desktop Software is looking at, redirecting it to look at the folder where your IPD file is.

Good luck!

Well, the backup/restore process doesn't actually do everything. See this for what it handles:

  • KB03974List of all databases on the BlackBerry smartphone

If what you are looking for is not on that list, then it's not part of the process (unless you did exactly as the earlier KB instructed, in which case it can also backup Device Memory I think). Now, depending on how you did the update, you might have had it wipe Device Memory...and if the things you want are there, then they are gone. What I do is always store things on my Media Card and nothing in Device Memory...that way, the update process can't touch it. Further, I make regular copy/paste backups of my Media Card to my PC...I suppose the same should apply to Device Memory as well.

I'm sorry if what you needed is gone.

Good luck!
