Blackberry upgrade?

I have a curve 8520 which is due for upgrade.  The 8520 has frustrated me on two matters - track pad freezing and not being able to use any map based software.  Otherwise I've been happy with Blackberry, its certainly been a good phone for me, and would like to upgrade to another blackberry.

I've been to the shop to try and do this and am advised by the store that blackberry's are no good for any form of map software and I should go for Android if I want maps.

I THINK I'm reading right though that the 9320 and 9360 do have GPS and can therefore work map and sat nav based apps.  Is that right?

Has any progress been made with later models in terms of reducing track pad problems?  And is there anything I can do with a new phone to minimise the risk of their developing?

I suspect that was an opinion provided to you by someone with a particular bias. For example, in addition to my Z10, I have an Android device...and every time I use Google Maps, it crashes the device. Gather together people who are comfortable with 6 different devices and you will likely get 6 different opinions...such is the state of the human psychie!

I always have good luck comparing specific models via this site:

I have had several different BBs over the years, starting with a Storm 1 (well, actually, many years before that, a much much older one...but for this purpose, that one does not count). I always have had good luck (in general) with the GPS/map functions provided by either BB Maps or even (when compatible) Google Maps (which is interesting given my current experience with Google Maps and an Android device).

That is much harder to quantify...talk to someone who had problems, and they'll tell you it's junk. Talk to others with no problems, and they will have a different story. But one cannot expect perfection with anything designed, built, and used by humans. On my last track-pad based device (9860), I felt it worked superbly.

Basically, just keep it clean and dry.

Good luck!

Hello,

The simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):

1) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages

2) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed

3) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:

4) If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  • C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML

5) Launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC. If, during the process, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.

Don't forget to backup.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • KB19915How to perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software

Good luck and let us know!
