Connect 8900 with Linksys WRT160N router

I am unable to connect my Blackberry 8900 Curve to my Linksys WRT160N wireless router.  I have a Samsung phone and it connected no problem.  My router provides a "W-Fi Protected Setup" button, and the 8900 has a "Push Button Setup" but so far no dice.  T-Mobile says it's a Linksys problem, Linksys says it's a Blackberry problem.  I don't know how to get a hold of Blackberry to see what they would say.

Re: Connect 8900 with Linksys WRT160N router

Couple of things to look for:

  • Make sure you router's SSID broadcast is on (at least while you set it up)
  • If you browser has WEP on, on you BB you need to give it the key
  • Your router may be filtering MAC addreses, so make you to either include you BB MAC address or turn off the filter. (this is btw a good security practice along with the SSID broadcast to prevent some one stealing your bandwith)

Re: Connect 8900 with Linksys WRT160N router

I was finally able to connect by lowering my WEP security to 64-bit.

After that "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" worked.

The problem remains, however, because 64-bit WEP and even 128-bit WEP are terribly insecure:

Re: Connect 8900 with Linksys WRT160N router

I finally got this to work with WPA2 running. Here are the steps that got wi-fi working on my Blackberry Curve 8900 Titanium smartphone:

  1. Go to your linksys WRT160N router page by typing "http://192.168.1.1" in URL line in your browser.
    1. you will be prompted to enter a username and password. The default username is "admin"; the default password is "admin" as well. If you've changed anything pull out your documentation because you will need to login.
  2. When you get to the router page you will be in the "setup" tab. Click on the "wireless" tab
  3. You will now be in the "basic wireless settings" subtab of the "wireless" tab.
  4. Click on the "wireless security" subtab to set your WPA or WPA2 passphrase. It should be at least 15 characters, use upper and lowercase letters, and include numbers.
    1. If you haven't previously setup wireless security you'll have to update all of the devices you use with your WRT160N.
  5. Click "save settings" button. There should be a confirmation page and then you'll return to the tab you were on.
  6. Click back to the "basic wireless settings" subtab of the "wireless tab"
  7. At the top of this tab you will find "configuration view"; select "manual"
  8. Click save settings and the "continue" button on the confirmation page.
  9. You are now ready to setup your Blackberry Curve 8900

On your Blackberry Curve 8900:

  1. Push the "BB" key--also known as the "menu" key
  2. Select the settings folder (the folder with the little green gear on it)
  3. Click on the "setup wi-fi" button
  4. If your router is broadcasting its SSID click on the "scan for networks" button--if it's not broadcasting click the "manually add network button."
  5. Click on the network you wish to join
  6. At this point it will tell you that your wireless network support wi-fi connected setup and tells you to push "next" and it will then give you a PIN that you can enter into the router page that dissappeared when you completed step 7 above.
  7. DO NOT CLICK NEXT!!!!!
  8. Instead click "back"
  9. At this point it does no actually bring you back. Instead there will be a place to enter whats called a psk--this is where you enter the WPA password you created in your router page.
  10. Click "connect."
You are now wi-fi enabled. Well, I am anway.

Re: Connect 8900 with Linksys WRT160N router

This really helped me out. I have tmobile, no data plan that i know of but was trying to connect from my home wi-fi router. I'm not technologically savvy at all and it took me a few hours of getting familiar with all this techo talk so it was complicated but with the step by step instructions it helped. Appreciate it man. Afterward to go on to the internet browser I chose hotspot browser on the wi-fi set up wizard thing and i'm connecting to the internet. So i can be in another room in the house and pick up the signal that's good.

zowwie you are genius!  Tried the auto-connect wpa2 multiple times and would just time out (enen though this worked for all my other devices).  The back button, enter passphrase trick worked like a charm.  Thanks for the post!!!

[ Edited ]

I have followed the instructions, but still my BB is not connected -COMPLEETLY-.

It sees my home network, and it is 'connected' BUT when looking at the WIFI sign, it's not highlighted, neither do I have a green checkmark at wireless connections.

Does somebody know what I still miss?
