Copying Text Messages from my Berry to my PC

G'day y'all :Flowers:

I am having difficult with my Curve.  I really need to backup/save/transfer a whole bunch of text messages from my Curve (s) to my PC.  These are extremely important and I don't want them lost.  I have connected my Curve to my laptop and chose the USB function.  Checked all the files that are visible but I cannot find anything that resembles a text message on my Curve.  So how do I :

1. Save my text messages as a .txt file?

2. Save them to a folder on my memory card that would be visible via Windows Explorer?

3. Save all conversations from one contact to a specific folder on the memory card?

4. Not lose all of this data?

What ever help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks much!

ch Re: Copying Text Messages from my Berry to my PC

:-Thanks much for pointing me to the software.  I am a puter tech but I can't operate a remote or a berry very well it seems without some help.  Can solder boards but not operate a phone outside of phone mode that is.

I have installed the software, successfully completed a backup.  But I haven't yet been able to copy the text messages that I need to be able to read from the phone to my laptop.  I am running Vista :-( which doesn;t make things easy.  Anyhoosie, I still cannot find my text messages.

So what I need to be able to do is to copy these text messages to my laptop.  For some reason I was advised to save them to the SIM card .. well now the SIM card is full and I dare not delete those text messages to free up the SIM card.  If I lose these text messages it will be a calamity.

The only thing that I can see is to forward each of the text messages to my email account, but that will take hours .. literally hours as there are hundreds to do.

Whatever help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.  Cheers

Re: ch Re: Copying Text Messages from my Berry to my PC

Well, I fear that you skipped some things in that other thread. Having completed the backup is excellent, but the next step is obtaining a 3rd party PC app that can parse the resulting backup file and present it to you in human readable format. Natively, no computer can do that since the file is of a proprietary format...so you need to search for (Google will be useful to you) a 3rd party PC app to parse the file and provide you what you need.

Please re-read those sections of the linked thread. After all, here you've merely said "I haven't yet been able to copy the text messages that I need"...sadly, that tells me nothing about what you actually may have attempted, so I can only assume you attempted nothing yet. Hence, I refer you back to what has already been provided as it already contains the information you need to proceed from this point.

Good luck!

Re: Copying Text Messages from my Berry to my PC

Yup, you were right, I missed the 3rd party parser software.  I now have MagicBerry 3.5.0 installed.  Keep getting DB errors - can't parse DB etc.,   Re-reading the help files.

I need to be able to extract the text messages -- I am assuming that when say my daughter sends me a text message this is actually and SMS message?  If that is the case, then I guess this parser would be the answer.  Course I just have to figure out why the errors.

Again, any help for this RIM novice would be greatly appreciated.  I am not a programmer or even a beta tester type .. just a basic hardware geek with some pretty good skillsets on a puter.

Well, there are many possible ways to interpret "text message". SMS is one. MMS is another.  And those are the two "standard" text messaging things, which are part of your voice-level services (as opposed to your data level and BB-proprietary level services). This KB lists all of the databases that should be contained within the backup file:

  1. Make sure that the version of MagicBerry you are using is compatible with the version of the Desktop Software you used to create the backup file you are trying to parse.
  2. Take a new backup to see if, for some reason, the one you created was damaged
  3. Try other parsing apps

Good luck!
