I have been trying to change the shortcuts/ icons on the homescreen, but unable to do so ..

Can someone help ..

What are you trying to do, change the default ones?

yeah .. basically trying to remove couple of icons like the calender and include icons such as facebook or google maps

Ok, on your homescreen, press menu button so you see all your icons. That first row is the row you see when your back on your wallpaper. Highlight any icon and click move and then choose where you wanna move it to wherever you want. If the icon is in a folder, click move to folder and click home, then move to wherever
