I woke up this morning with an icon for the OS 7.1 update. So I started it probably around 7.30am. It is now 14.00pm and the screen hasn't moved from "Back up your device" "Social feeds 0%" and "Overall Backup progress 10%" since about 12pm.
Is this normal? How much longer can I expect it to take? I can't do anything with my phone and it is stuck on that screen.
Thanks in advance.

Quite honestly, don't do over the air, wireless upgrades, every. They fail too often.
At this point, your backup is likely failing due to a hang-up at backing up your Social Feeds module.
You can cancel the upgrade now, or simply remove the battery for a minute and replace to reboot. You should be fine to reboot as normal.
If you want to upgrade the OS, install the BlackBerry Desktop Software on your PC, connect and DO A BACKUP FIRST, then proceed with any OS upgrades it suggests.

Thanks for your response. How do I cancel the update? I had the battery removed for a few minutes but the minute I plugged it back in and rebooted it has gone back the back to the back up screen, I am now plugged into the pc though, but there is no difference. Havent had the chance to do a back up from the Blackberry Desktop Software.
Thanks again for your help.

Please test this...
Remove the battery from the BlackBerry for a minute, and then follow the instructions below to reboot in Safe Mode.
Now, with the device in Safe Mode, does the BlackBerry continue downloading the upgrade, or continue to stick?
To start-up a BlackBerry® Storm™ 2 and BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry® 6 and BlackBerry® 7 to 7.1 in Safe Mode complete the following steps:
Safe Mode Disclaimer message:
"Your device is currently in Safe Mode. Your device starts in Safe Mode if you hold the Escape key during startup. To remain in Safe Mode, click OK. To exit Safe Mode, click Reset."
NOTE: To turn off safe mode, remove and reinsert the BlackBerry smartphone battery. Safe mode enabled status is indicated by a safe mode indicator in the BlackBerry smartphone status section of the Home screen.
