Desktop Manager will not recognize that my smartphone is connected

My computer does recognize that the phone is connected; I can access it.

I tried using Desktop Manager 6.0 and 5.0.1.  I was able to sync only once with 6.0 when I first installed it yesterday.  Then, I got an endless "connecting" message, so I uninstalled and reinstalled v. 6.0 twice.  I did a clean unistall of all RIM software, and re-installed 6.0.  then unistalled it and installed v. 5.0.1.

I get this - all gray

I am very, very frustrated. Does anyone know what is happening?
